ForwardMotion’s goal is to reduce reliance on car travel and encourage people to consider alternative ways of getting to work, training or education. By working with partner organisations and providing a range of services, ForwardMotion supports people cycling, walking and using public transport – from offering training sessions to journey buddies to taster tickets.

In 2017, the Ideas in Motion campaign was expanded across south Essex under the South Essex Active Travel project, a three-year collaboration between Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, Essex County Council and Thurrock Council. The £3.323m behaviour change campaign is funded by the Department for Transport’s Access Fund. In 2018, Ideas in Motion changed to ForwardMotion to better reflect the different target audiences and geographic areas of the South Essex Active Travel project.
